The law states that in order to file a naturalization application, the applicant must be at least 18 years old. The applicant must be an LPR (lawful permanent resident) in accordance with the immigration laws. The applicant is eligible to file for naturalization if they have been granted lawful permanent residence and lived continuously as an LPR in the US for at least 5 years prior to applying for naturalization while showing good moral character.

The applicant must show that they are attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States. Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. However, some applicants are exempt from this requirement if certain conditions are met. All applicants for naturalization must demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the history of the country and of the principles and form of government of the United States.
